85th Anniversary: In Memory of the Crew and Passengers of Pan Am Flt 229

ATTENTION AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS and ENTHUSIASTS!

K1H Special 48 Hour Global Event / Pan Am Flight 229 Memorial

Hosts: www.lostclipper.com team, WB3FMS, and the Aero Amateur Radio Club

In memory of the crew and passengers of Pan Am Flt 229 which vanished 85 years ago on July 29, 1938 UTC while traversing the Pacific Ocean. And in recognition of the expedition planned for 2024 attempting to find the remains of the crew and passengers.

The aircraft was called the “Hawaii Clipper” and it was one of three Martin M-130 flying boats built at the Glenn L. Martin plant in Essex, Maryland. The final radio transmission was made on July 29, 1938 at 0211 UTC and attempts to contact the aircraft 60 seconds later failed. We will quote their final transmission on July 29, 2023 at 0211 UTC (Which is 10:11pm ET on July 28, 2023 at the event location in Essex, Maryland), and then pause for a 60 second moment of silence before resuming contacts. The aircraft and crew vanished with no trace ever found. No distress call was sent even though the radio operator was in an active communication regarding a routine weather update.

The Aero Amateur Radio Club that is hosting this event was first established at the Glenn L. Martin manufacturing plant where this aircraft was built, and two transmitters for the event will be established at the Essex Skypark Airport (W48) located in Essex, MD near the original location of the Martin manufacturing plant.

The Special Event call sign is K1H and our QSL card will feature the aircraft and the location in Micronesia where the crew and passenger remains are believed to be located.
