In less than a week, it will be the 78th anniversary of the Hawaii Clipper vanishing. For almost 80 years, not a single bolt, photo or other piece of evidence has been located. So why do we still care? Because for one thing, I have stood on the very ground where I am certain the remains of the passengers and crew are buried. Because I personally interviewed many witnesses who share a similar story of events, sightings and experiences that form a complete picture. If thirty people in five different languages tell you the same story that they saw something – that something is almost certainly real. The only thing left is DNA and that is what I am now hunting.
Next week we will reveal a long lost report has never before been shared with the public and will shed light onto the Hawaii Clipper in a very powerful and new way. Most importantly, the report clearly shows how the massive M-130 Martin flying boat was behaving erratically in flight “as if dodging rain squalls even though no severe meteorological phenomena existed in the air at that time.”
Within mere hours, five long range Army bombers were searching the last known area along with thirteen surface vessels, two Navy amphibious aircraft and several submarines already stationed in the vicinity. Only an oil slick later proven to have no relation to the flying boat was discovered. With no debris, soon there was no story. However in 1964 this changed and indeed, there was a sighting of sorts – two eye witnesses who described the last fateful moments of the fifteen Americans.
With the aid of the Pan Am Airways Archives; the never before publicly shown report will clearly dispel how the long held belief that foul weather led to the demise of the Hawaii Clipper or that its crew was not adequately prepared for an emergency at sea will finally be put to rest.
